Philoptochos Society
(

March 2007

Dear Members,

On February 24th, the Philoptochos held our monthly meeting.  This was a combined meeting with the St. Dionysios Ladies Club. I want to thank all of those who attended. We discussed many items and A LOT of progress was made. Below are just a few items that we discussed:

Karen White presented the Treasurer’s report. A profit of $2,039.00 was made during our sale of Vasilopita. All proceeds were donated to St. Basil’s academy.  A one year memorial for Mary Palaskas was held onSunday, February 25th. Thank you to everyone who helped with this.

Mary Antos, on behalf of the Cookbook Revision Committee gave an update.  The Philoptochos will host our annual Palm Sunday luncheon on April 1st. The menu will be Plaki, rice, salad, green beans, bread and a dessert. Adult meal prices will be $10.00 per person and $5.00 for children 12 and under.

We will be selling homemade Tsoureki during the Palm Sunday Luncheon for $15.00 per loaf. It was voted and agreed that we would support our National Commitments for 2007.

An Election Committee was established and will present nominations for open board positions at our March meeting. The positions that will be available are President, Vice President, and Recording Secretary.

Karen White presented a report on St. Mary of Egypt. Our next date to sponsor a meal will be March 30th.

Ham and bean soup and cornbread will be the meal choice.  Philoptochos will host an evening coffee hour on March 4th for the second Sunday of Lent.

It was discussed that the St. Dionysios Ladies Club and Philoptochos Society should merge into one organization.  A meeting of both groups’ officers will meet at a later date to discuss further.  The meeting was adjourned with a closing prayer.

I have also received a letter from National Philoptochos instructing all chapters to conduct their elections in May, 2007 in accordance with National Chapter bylaws. It also goes on to state that “No President, or any officer, may serve more than (2) year terms consecutively, in the same elected office.”

Our Philoptochos chapter will have the positions of President, Vice President, and Recording Secretary open. An election committee has been established to gather names for consideration.

If you would like to serve in any of these positions or know of someone, please contact Carole Spanos or Mary Antos. Elections will be held at our meeting in May.  February also kicks off our 2007 membership drive. Annual dues are $20.00. Karen White will be sending a letter to all the ladies of St. Dionysios in order to update our records.

You may mail this back to the church or it can be given to myself, Karen White or placed in the Philoptochos mail slot in the copy room. Your annual dues allows for us to continue our very important ministry work. I urge you to continue to support Philoptochos.

During the meeting we also discussed our annual Palm Sunday luncheon. In order to make this a successful event, we really need a lot of help. On Saturday, March 31st, we will need help with food preparation and set up. On Palm Sunday, volunteers will be needed for serving, cooking, and clean up. A volunteer sign up sheet will be posted on the kitchen door. Finally, one last but very important item. If many of you don’t already know, Catherine Hrones has recently been hospitalized. Catherine is a very special lady; she has always supported Philoptochos as a member, advisor, and past President.

From the first moment that I took over as President, she has supported me. I can always count on Catherine to help me in any way. Please keep Catherine in your prayers.  And as always, I thank each and everyone of you for your continued support of Philoptochos.

Sincerely,

Lauren Maroudas, President
